PC Format - The gallery - Reader Site of the month

Back once again with the renegade master. The Gallery returns to a smattering of applause and a few stifled coughs at the back.

Welcome to the stunningly convoluted but somehow strangely compelling world of McCOYdotCOdotUK (www.mccoy.co.uk) a place of poetry, fine design and extreme randomnesss, Without further ado, here's the site creator Rich McCoy to explain all.

Who are you?

I'm Rich McCoy, a 28-year-old Web design (formerly fine artist), living in the shadow of the Malvern Hills. I'm husband to a writer and father to an enthusiastic two--year-old girl.

What's www.mccoy.co.uk about?

It's basically a place for people to hang about and play around with stuff , and somewhere for me to try experiments. It's separated into chapters, including the likes of Doodleview<, which follows my usual theme of creating a piece of work in one sitting, and Propelled Population by Disconcerted Angels {now Isis Tablet} , a showcase of my wife's dark stories and poems. Its mainly however, a place for me to do something different then my usual tack of building commercial sites.

I've recently tried to open some more chapters such as A Reason to Smile {Now a seperate charity site}, which is a continuation of a seven-year-old project and Kill the Phukin Logo, a section attempting to question the role and relevance of logos by inviting people to design their own.

Why did you first decide to create a Web Site?

I needed a place to express my creativity external to my commercial work, the other reason was to aid in getting a job, hopefully working for like-minded people who want to push what the Web can do

What Tools do you tend to use and why?

I tend to start in PhotoShop, and drag things around from other software such as 3D Studio Max as well as photos and images from other sources. When I am happy I begin slicing things up, optimise the graphics and create any animations in Fireworks. Then I hand code all the html in an editor such as Homesite.

I used to use a lot of nested tables, but with CSS becoming more widespread, I have started to use layers, they can be much more precise, quicker to implement and since you need less code than embedding tables three or more deep, you don't end up tying yourself into code knots.

Which was the most helpful tool in the creation of your site?

An equal combination of my own imagination, Adobe Photoshop, Allaire Homesite and other media for inspiration. I find a great many good ideas in films books and magazines.
