There have been a few mobile web sites that I have designed amongst many of new projects I’ve been working on over the last 9 – 10 months, most of which haven’t made it onto my portfolio. I’ve not updated my portfolio not because I’m not proud of the new designs, but because I’ve been to damned busy working on them and relocating. So anyway… most of the new web projects will have to wait tucked up in there nice warm little digital folders until I get time. But with Mobile coming along so fast I felt I needed to show that I do that too and have been working with Hypermedia in Auckland on projects for The Disney Channel, Kraft Foods, Institute of Chartered Accountants & more. After what felt like far too long I now have a new office in Europe, having moved to Kenmare, Co. Kerry Ireland for the time being!
Its a long long story, and its a bit of a personal one but needless to say that we are now much closer to family and a vast majority of my existing client base whilst still servicing my clients in Australia & New Zealand. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve loved living here on Waiheke Island in New Zealand for nearly a year and a bit, but unfortunately like all things this too must pass, that fact is that no matter how much I love the place its just too far for the rest of my partnership from the rest of there world, so it is with great sadness that I say my good bye’s and hello’s to a new life in the Aquitaine region of France and hello to new adventures that keep my world turning. After a relatively quiet start to the year (well who hasn’t had a quiet year so far) the last couple of weeks has seen an agency in Sydney become a client with a suite of property and construction web site design projects. And today I just had a great meeting with an international agency for whom I am branching out into developing a couple of mobile devices web sites for the HUGE entertainment company (I’ll not disclose who they are just yet, but needles to say you know them). So soon there will be a whole new section to my portfolio as I move into this rapidly growing market, I might even write up some of the things I learn on the journey to help others get started developing for mobile. The following was a press release created by the folks at The Pond a great organization who represent my skills in New Zealand.
UK creative Richard McCoy, a man who was building websites at a time when most of us were still coming to grips with dot matrix printers, has joined The Pond as a senior web design director.
Since 1995 he’s built up a huge amount of digital experience working as a software engineer and senior web designer across a range of industries. In saying that, he has a definite bent towards social marketing. Read the rest of this entry »

As a bit of a side to my primary bread and butter of web design, development & art direction I also have began to cut out a niche for myself using my older pre-interactive skill set as a fine artist and illustrator amongst other things. My latest two illustration projects have been for the wonderful concept of Ooooby (Out of our own back yards) a concept that is deeply aligned with my own community, economical and social philosophies – http://www.mccoy.co.uk/portfolio/illustratorOoooby.php. The second new illustration project is as an additional service in partnership with the User Interface design and general interactive consultancy that I have also provided for the Greek company Days4U Each illustration is based on a different type of event that can be purchased either for yourself or as a gift, they are all based on photos selected by Days4U and can be seen at http://www.mccoy.co.uk/portfolio/illustratorDays4U.php.

For far to long my portfolios have bounced around free and unconstrained, well I just finished some new pants to keep them together and comfortable, well in fairness its an old pair of pants that have been made all sparkly with a new interface and sense of purpose. The site is at McCoy.me.uk and is designed as a return to old habits of creating atypical interfaces like I used to do way back in the day but deviated from for the purpose’s of accessibility and efficiency. This new site pulls together the following sites McCoy.co.uk (My primary design portfolio), Little Hellos (My Photography portfolio), My Pepper Soul (Some graphical tinkering) and McCoy Digital (the archives of old lost experiments and musings).
The design is based on some photos I got done in order to work with The Pond and is the first time I’ve used an old school image map in many years, I do hope to develop the page further with more interactive elements in time. Before I do that I must do a long overdue portfolio update on McCoy.co.uk I have a stack of over 6 months work festering in the corner hidden from the light of your gaze.

A proliferation of lists exists about design and the internet and do’s and dont’s and whilst laying in bed this morning feeling like hell warmed up I thought I would go back to the original commandments from the big man (No not Jacob Nieslon’s use it lists, the other big fella ) and see what they had to say about the issue: Read the rest of this entry »

The big news in interactive creative director circles is the move of Douglas Bowman from being the lead designer at Google to being the creative director at Twitter, and after seeing hundreds of tweets on the matter I eventually succumbed to pressure and decided to read Bowman’s post on his reasoning for leaving and they all seem fine and dandy but I could not understand why all the ho ha about it amongst the interactive design community.

After many a late night and early morning, sever cups of late night coffee, episodes sleeping on the sofa in front of the tragic lantern before skulking into my office after every one has gone to bed for a spot a midnight feast of jQeary & design I’ve finally done three things I’ve been planning for many months but never had the time to do.

After messing about with WordPress before to no great effect or commitment on my behalf I decided to, in the words of a weirder man then me to ‘Grip it and rip it’ (stifled chuckle) and have now hopefully mastered the art. What pushed me to do this is the fact that I get asked so often if I can adapt and create WordPress templates and I’ve always answered with an embarrassed murmur ‘Not really tried’. With the explosion of blogging several years back It struck me as absurd that I hadn’t taken the time out to get my head around it, so in no more then 2 evenings (a fist full of hours) I have now created / adapted an existing template to suit my needs, and here it is. The subject matters I will blog about will be as erratic as my likes and interests as will the frequency of update will reflect my workload. The spelling and grammar will still remain ‘Quirky’ at best, also I suppose reflective of my nature & personality.

My first book of photographs, published by blurb is now ready for purchase in softback, hardback as an image wrap and hardback with a dust jacket, its not a huge book and will fit nice on a coffee table or in the loo, or probably more fitting on a yacht, and not the book I’ve been alluding to (more on that latter, when the details are finalized) but its NICE, and the process thanks to blurb was a nice and simple one, so go and get your self a copy if you like, all proceeds will go towards funding an exhibition of paintings and photographs.

I first encountered Oliver Jeffers‘s work when discovering ‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy
” in one of the many book shops in Market Harborough, UK whilst living there and my first impression where of amazement that someone had created a book exactly like I would have done if I was to do it, and it encouraged and enthused me to pick up a pencil again.

I’m fairly sure that nearly everyone has there idea of what there perfect restaurant / cafe would be down to the decor, food, music, staff etc. some may have even been there, some may have a fantasy of a famous top restaurant that they dream of visiting one day. I have had the good fortune to visit mine twice and its called ‘Driving Creek Cafe‘ up the Driving Creek Road just north of Coromandel in New Zealand.

I had a bit of an odd time with this band, I used to love them when they where played on MTV’s 120 minutes back when I was 18 and even video’d them but it took me a good 20 years to get around to buying anything by them and when I did eventually order the George Best album from Amazon it turned out to be a misaddressing and the album actually contained a powerpoint presentation of the dangers of alcohol abuse by the drinks manufacturer Diageo, Ironic really considering what killed George Best. I read that this album was originally recorded under the name of David Gedge’s current band Cinerama but on listening to it he decided it was to dark and released it under the his old bands name instead, to be honest I don’t care its just sublime whatever the name on the cover.

Its not rocket science, but I get asked about it a fair amount so here is a very rough and ready over view of how I develop an updatable, portable and search engine friendly navigation. I’m calling it the eclipse method because it relies on setting up the html and css so that when certain classes and sub classes align beautiful things happen.

Quite recently I have had some very public and furious criticism and quite possibly the most cutting and hurtful was the criticism that revolves around my disability, with critics referring to me as ‘Thick’, ‘Illiterate’ & ‘stupid’. All these points more hurtful because of the fact that they are inaccurate and are born out of ignorance, bigotry & a self serving desire to make themselves appear more intelligent at the expense of another.
